Yes, you can change the status length without any software. Just follow these steps:
1. Close Y!M
2. Go to C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache
3. Open system.xml with Notepad
4. Find <max_custom_status>40</max_custom_status>
5. Replace with  <max_custom_status>100</max_custom_status>,  or any other value

6. Save the file
7. Start Yahoo Messenger
That’s it. Enjoy!

Note: Work on versions older than Y!M 9.
